Hezekiah, a son of Ahaz
II Chronicles 29:3-6, 18-19a
3 In the very first month of the first year of his reign, Hezekiah reopened the doors of the Temple of the Lord and repaired them. 4 He summoned the priests and Levites to meet him at the courtyard east of the Temple. 5 He said to them, “Listen to me, you Levites! Purify yourselves, and purify the Temple of the Lord, the God of your ancestors. Remove all the defiled things from the sanctuary. 6 Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord our God. They abandoned the Lord and his dwelling place; they turned their backs on him.
Sixteen days later. . . . the Levites went to King Hezekiah and gave him this report: “We have cleansed the entire Temple of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the Bread of the Presence with all its utensils. 19 We have also recovered all the items discarded by King Ahaz when he was unfaithful and closed the Temple.
Fortunately, kings don’t live forever – well, the kings of this earth don’t anyway. Hezekiah, another of Ahaz’s sons, eventually takes over as King, but the Assyrians are still on the prowl. It isn’t long before they come knocking on the door of the Southern Kingdom, looking to intimidate and conquer this upstart kid who thinks he can do better than his father Ahaz did.
Once again, God sends a message to the king through His prophet Isaiah. It’s pretty much the same message as God gave to his father Ahaz: “Don’t panic. Trust Me.” But Hezekiah’s holding in his hands a letter from Assyria detailing exactly what’s going to happen to him if he doesn’t surrender.
What do you do when you get the worst news imaginable?
Hezekiah takes the letter to the Temple, spreads it out in front of God and prays. God hears. God answers. God strikes the Assyrians with such force that they never really recover.
Fear and anxiety still make people do foolish things. A person’s got to trust in something. The question is: Will we give in to panic, or will we take our biggest problems to God and trust in Him?
Prayer:
Dear God – We cannot control today, let alone what will happen tomorrow or next year. We would be fools to trust in our own abilities; they are too meager to provide any security. Help us to choose to trust in you, your character and your promises.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
