A Tale of Two Kings
For centuries, there hadn’t been a major superpower on the international scene. The usual suspects (Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Persia) had all been in a season of decline, and this allowed Israel to become a nation of prominence.
But bullies are resilient, and it can be hard to keep them down for long.
After Israel split into two kingdoms, during the lifetime of Isaiah, Assyria roused from its slumber and began gobbling up smaller, weaker nations like they were deviled eggs at a church picnic. Needless to say, anxiety was spreading in the hearts of people everywhere – especially down in the Southern Kingdom of Judah.
The Southern Kingdom had enjoyed a time of great wealth and prosperity under their king Uzziah, but his son Ahaz seemed to be taking the wrong path. Assyria was marching their way, and people were getting nervous.
It didn’t make things much better when the king of the Northern Kingdom came to Ahaz with a plan: “I’m going to join forces with the king of Aram to fight against Assyria. Why don’t you join us as well? Maybe the three of us put together can beat them!” Ahaz refuses the offer. His northern cousin turns on him, hoping to have him overthrown and install a new king who will join the alliance.
Ahaz needs help, and God knows it. So God sends a message through the prophet Isaiah: “Don’t panic. Trust Me, and I’ll get you through this.” But Ahaz isn’t buying what God is selling. Instead, he comes up with the crazy idea to go to the biggest bully on the block. He asks Assyria for protection.
Isaiah practically pleads with Ahaz to just trust God instead of trusting the military might of the Assyrian army. He even tells Ahaz to ask God for a sign, but Ahaz has already made up his mind. A sign will only confirm his blatant disobedience and disregard for God’s command.
Ahaz chooses to ally himself with Assyria, and it ruins him. He becomes a puppet king, a slave to Assyria, a figurehead, king in name only. He ends up sending the gold and silver from the Temple in Jerusalem to the Assyrian king (his new master), to build altars to pagan gods. He even makes a burnt offering of his own son.
Fear and anxiety drive people to do foolish things.
How do we handle anxiety in our lives? We’ll hear about Ahaz’s son Hezekiah tomorrow who deals with his anxiety in a slightly different manner.
Prayer:
Dear God – May we always turn first to you in the midst of life’s challenges, knowing that we are inadequate on our own. With you, everything is possible.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
