Stranded
Psalm 46:1 ~ God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
I was in an unfamiliar city, and it was starting to snow as I pulled onto the expressway. As I merged into the rush of late-night traffic, my engine suddenly lost power. I pulled over in a panic. I was stranded in subzero weather, stuck in a section where the road curved toward the downtown district. I waited for someone to stop, but no one did. Newspapers have reported too many bad stories.
I felt as insignificant as roadside litter as I waited in the shadow of the lonely city on that black, snowy night. I was scared; I was cold. So I did the only thing I could think of: I told God I needed help. I asked him to ease my anxieties and thanked him that he knew exactly where I was.
As cars hurtled past, I realized I had no choice buy to trust God. And in that moment I became aware that God was enough. I then tried to think of Bible verses I knew: “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5). It was a promise of God’s I could count on – regardless of what happened. “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear” (Heb 13:6). It was an assurance God could be trusted – regardless of the outcome.
At that moment, a sense of God’s peace overwhelmed me. Praying to him was like talking with a best friend. And a few minutes later, a sort of miracle happened. A car pulled over to help.
It’s often true that when I dwell on myself and my problems, my troubles seem to grow. But when I dwell on God, my troubles seem to go. That doesn’t mean things are always bright and rosy. Christians aren’t immune to hurt and heartache. Yet God gives us a special capacity to cope with such times.
Prayer:
Dear God – You can be trusted! Thank you for your peace when we come to you with concerns and requests. Help us to dwell on you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
