It’s just life and death stuff
It’s the last day of the term and it could be appropriate to say some prayers for the holidays. Christmas can be lonely, stressful and amazing. We could take some time to pray for protection; as we travel, get together with family, hit the slopes or the beach, enjoy our Winnipeg snow, or relax inside.
Two weekends ago, I heard a video message from a guy named Andy Stanley. He made us make a shape with our hands. Put your hands out in front of you with your palms facing forward and your fingers pointing up. Make a U shape by putting the tips of your thumbs together and keeping your pointer fingers up.
Think of your left pointer finger as your birth. Think of your right pointer finger as your death. When we pray, think, worry or whatever – we tend to do it within these parameters – life and death. We worry about tomorrow, we pray for protection before trips, and more. But Andy Stanley reminded me that God says a lot about our lives here on earth.
6 “What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. 7 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. ~ Luke 12:6-7
I think it’s important to remember that God is looking out for us. No matter what happens in life, God will always be near us. We don’t have to worry about the regular day to day stuff. We perhaps don’t even need to pray about this normal stuff. Andy Stanley said that most of us pray like this, “Bless me, bless me, bless me, help me, help me, help me, protect me, protect me, protect me.” I know I say most of my prayers like this!
I wonder if God looks down on us when we pray and says, “I’ve got all that taken care of! Pray for real needs around you! Let’s think about BIG things – helping people, loving others, showing care and concern for people, being patient, and more. Think of things that God is asking you to be a part of, pray on those things, and get involved with God!
Prayer:
Dear God – We want to learn how to be involved in the BIG things in life. Allow us to see how you’re working around us and join together with you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
