Do not be Afraid

On Sunday, I was reminded of the image of angels that I have in my mind. Too often when an angel is talked about, I see the little Valentine’s cherubs with tiny wings and baby-like bodies and faces. But I remember this poster from a magazine when I was a kid – it was an artist’s interpretation of an angel and it was very intimidating. In Scripture, there are references to angels and the first thing that many of them say is, “Do not be afraid!” I’m guessing they say it because when they show up, most of the time people are freaked out. Maybe that’s because more often than not, they’re bringing judgment. I don’t know for sure, but they must be super intimidating.

Luke 2:8-11 ~ And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

Luke 1:26-33 ~ God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a woman named Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God (paraphrased).

Prayer:

Dear God – Thank you for your angels that bring protection to many people. They also brought news of great joy, news that many people had been longing to hear. Years of prophecies fulfilled in one night. Shepherds and wise men came to worship Jesus. Thank you for sending your son.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
