Missing the Target
Romans 3:23-24 ~ For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
When I was a kid, my friends and I would often have rock throwing contests in the canyon behind my folk's house. The goal was to reach a specific target. Each kid would try and prove that he could throw the furthest as he attempted to hit a bulls-eye that was unattainable using our feeble arms. I usually ended up losing and the one that was best at baseball or football usually won.
Imagine if you will, that the glory of God was somewhere far off on the horizon, in sight, but out of reach by human effort alone. What if the only way to get close to Him was to be holy and live a good life? A lot of people think that this is the case today. If it were, then child molesters and evil men like Hitler would be oceans away from God. Others may be a thousand miles away, while your average believer could be as close as a few hundred miles from His glory. But what about the real holy men like Billy Graham and St. Francis? Though they may get a lot closer to the glory of God through their works than most, they still would have fallen a few miles short on their own strength. If the target was to reach the glory of God, they, like the rest of us, have missed the mark.
The Bible says that apart from accepting Jesus as your Savior, making Him Lord of your life and asking forgiveness for your sins, we will never reach God. And the only thing that bridges that massive gap between yourself and Jesus isn't your attempt at good works, but rather the good work of Jesus on the cross 2,000 years ago. It is only through His redemption that we are justified freely and made holy in God's eyes.
Do you want to make Jesus Christ Lord of every aspect of your life and be redeemed? Do you desire to follow Him for all eternity? If so, tell God that. And talk to one of your teachers or Pastor Adrian about it. Hope from God is what you’re looking for.
Prayer:
Dear God – Help us to see that hope from you is exactly what we need, what we crave when we’re at the end of ourselves, wondering what’s next. Thank you for the work that Jesus did on the cross, bearing my sin, bridging the gap between us.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
