Devotional Day 6, Thursday, Dec 10, 2009
Years Ago
Let’s look at some of the prophecies foretold about the Messiah’s coming:
Jesus’ Virgin Birth
Prophesy: Isaiah 7:14 (written about 700 B.C.)~All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).
Reality: Matthew 1:18, 22~ This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 22All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet [in Isaiah 7:14].
Jesus’ Family Line
Prophecy: Isaiah 11:1-2 (about 700 B.C.)~Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him. . .
Jeremiah 23:5 (about 600 B.C.)~”For the time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land.
Reality: In Luke Chapter 3, a family lineage illustrates how Jesus is of the same line of David, in fact, the same line as God himself! We won’t read it out today because it’s a list of 77 names. Jesus is about 43 generations down the line from King David.
Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem
Prophecy: Micah 5:2 (around 700 B.C.)~ But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose origins are from the distant past.
Reality: Matthew 2:1a~ Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod.
Prayer:
Dear Jesus – There were many things foretold about your coming, yet many still did not recognize you. Help us to recognize you at school today, at home this weekend, in our world. You are ever-present, interested in getting to know us. Thank you.
In Your Name, Amen
