Hope so Large
I Peter 1:3-5 ~ 3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
What do you look forward to? What do you daydream about concerning tomorrow? Christmas? A holiday trip? Snowboarding in the mountains? An upcoming concert? Is it thinking about the next raise and what you’re going to do with the extra money? Is it the new room your parents promised you in the basement? Is it job and university applications after you graduate?
Is hope only those things? Or is it bigger? Peter praised God, who has given us a living hope, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and has brought us into an inheritance that cannot perish, spoil, or fade. It is a kept inheritance – guarded or locked up in heaven – for you.
Look at your life. Can you say that what you hope for is something that will neither perish, spoil, nor fade?
In ourselves hope is tiny. In God hope is large.
In ourselves we grasp so little of hope, but when we see God and offer praise, we begin to move from the little, the fading, the spoiling, the perishing, to the great, the untarnished, the unspoiled, and the unfading. Whatever hopes you have today, let them be centered in the big hope – Jesus Christ.
Prayer:
Dear God – May we move past the corruptible, the decaying, our temporary hopes, and see what really counts – hope centered in you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
