John 1

1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He existed in the beginning with God. 3 God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

There were many prophecies made about the Messiah, even thousands of years before Jesus came. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Zechariah, and David each have writings that point to Jesus Christ coming to earth in a human body. Many knew about these prophecies and even studied them daily. However, many didn’t recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

In the above passage, John, the writer, is writing about Jesus coming into the world. The Messiah, of whom the prophecies were foretold was coming. He was almost here. But in order for people to understand that Jesus was in fact the Messiah, people needed to know that in fact Jesus was the Son of God, God incarnate, God coming into human flesh. John is trying to remind readers that Jesus, the Word, “existed in the beginning with God.” Once Jesus became known, many started realizing that the miracles and signs that proceeded him only pointed to his divine nature – the “Word was God.” Knowing his death was coming, Jesus said these words,

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. 2 For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. 3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. 4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

Prayer:

Dear God – Understanding your divinity and your humanity is almost impossible. Yet we see that you sent your son to earth and we see the divine through Jesus’ life. Help us to know you.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
