Devotional Day 5, Tuesday, Dec 1, 2009

Reading from John, Chapter 4:

25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26 Then Jesus told her, “I Am the Messiah!”

28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” 30 So the people came streaming from the village to see him. 40 . . .they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, 41 long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

The idea that someone was coming was no shock. They had heard prophecies, stories of what was to come for thousands of years. The Messiah would come and would save them – “the Savior of the world.” He would bring light to the world and an eternal kingdom, “of which his rule would never end.”

Living in expectation was nothing new or strange to them. They were always waiting, always expecting this Messiah to come. That is what we’re doing by honoring an Advent season: taking time to live in expectation like the Old Testament people once did. An author likened it to a hero or star that you look up to. If you’re a fan of Adrian Peterson, the top running back in the NFL, you’d get pretty excited if we came to your house for dinner one day. Maybe Steve Nash or MJ is your guy – you’d be pretty pumped if one of them showed up to watch FHL one lunch hour. “That’s how excited the Old Testament prophets were when they told people about Jesus’ coming. For 1500 years, those saints longed for and wrote details about the Messiah. Jesus was a hot topic. Even before he came, Christ provided hope for people. Whenever times got dark, the prophets reminded the people that they had Someone to look forward to, Someone who would bring light to their world.”1

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us prepare ourselves and others for Christmas. The Messiah did come and we can now have a friendship with you. You’re the most important person we’ll ever entertain.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
