Devotional Monday, November 30th, 2009 Day 4
The last day of November. December begins tomorrow and almost synonymously with December, we think of Christmas and the season that is coming. Are the leaves all cleaned up in your neighborhood? It’s strange walking down my street seeing green grass on almost every yard, with little sign of fallen leaves. The trees are completely bare, but there’s hardly a leaf to be found anywhere. With all the fantastic weather this fall, there seems to be little excuse for having time to rake or get the yard and house ready for winter. I’ve put away my moped several times, only to take it out again on the next Plus 9 day.
Leaves falling are a reminder of something that is coming. Of course, that’s winter: a fairly bitter, windy and cold season that we’ve come to know here in Winnipeg. Don’t get me wrong; there are mild days in a Manitoba winter and some of us love the white frozen snowflakes.
Still, some of us detest it and only hope for the signs of melt. In any case, the leaves having fallen once again only point to the fact that the cold weather will indeed be coming our way.
Advent is a word you’ll hear a lot in December. It’s a season on the Christian calendar that helps prepare our minds and hearts for Christmas. It’s a reminder of what is coming: the celebration of Jesus Christ’s coming to earth as a sacrifice to cover our sinful decisions. In our devotions, we’ll be spending some time looking Advent topics like hope, peace, joy, love. We’ve only got three weeks left until break but we’ll cover them. We’ll also be having a time of Advent preparation during chapel this week.
As you see leftover leaves in the gutter or piled against fences, think about WHO is coming this Christmas. Have you considered finding some time to meet with Him?
Prayer:
Dear God – Christmas preparations are happy at times and confusing as well. Help us to take time to focus on the reason for our Christmas break – your son Jesus Christ. As Canadians, we wouldn’t have to celebrate Christmas, but we get the privilege of doing so. Seek us as we seek you this December 2009.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
