Devotional Day 6, Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
Be the Word
Please welcome to chapel today our guest speaker and alum, Tim Ewert. We’re going to be talking about the Word of God and how we can BE it; how we can live it in the world.
There are many people that call Christians hypocrites. Last week I looked up the word hypocrisy. This word is regularly misused. I thought it was appropriate for people that don’t act on what they believe. However, it means pretending to believe or have a conviction that you don’t actually have. I know a lot of students at MBCI don’t pretend to have convictions or beliefs, they actually have them. Many believe in Jesus Christ. Just because our actions don’t always show what we believe, doesn’t mean we’re hypocrites. We still have our beliefs and convictions. But it could mean that we’re complacent, apathetic or even lazy. Further, if our actions DO NOT emulate or show what we believe, we may have to ask ourselves if we are just pretending.
OPTIONAL: “Nothing is more unjust, however common, than to charge with hypocrisy him that expresses zeal for those virtues which he neglects to practice; since he may be sincerely convinced of the advantages of conquering his passions, without having yet obtained the victory, as a man may be confident of the advantages of a voyage, or a journey, without having courage or industry to undertake it, and may honestly recommend to others, those attempts which he neglects himself.”
Others may have a hard time believing we’re not pretending if our actions don’t show it. It’s that whole 2-part thing – belief and then action. How can we live the Word?
Prayer:
Dear God – You’ve got something planned for us in chapel today. Help us to listen and look for the lesson you want to teach us about. Thank you for your Bible; it is a guidebook for our lives, a measure for a fulfilled life.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
