Devotional Day 1, Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

hey oh, no snow

November already. No snow when I was writing this – and it’s half way through November. That’s crazy. We’ve had some bitter evenings and some strong winds, but warmth keeps returning to Manitoba, holding off the frozen season of “Winterpeg.”

Many people might say “we’re blessed” this year. The snow has held off and we’ve had some awesome weather in September and October. It’s a funny thing when people use the word “blessed.” There are people that use it all the time. I think they’re the people who don’t like using the word “luck.” They’re the people that believe that God is blessing us for reasons known or unknown to us. I like hearing the word “blessed.”

However, there is another demographic that doesn’t use the word “blessed.” Many people of this group lack the confidence of knowing that God does in fact bestow blessing on his people on earth. Without knowing about God’s great love for earthly dwellers, they cannot confidently say God is blessing us, so they default to using the word “lucky” or avoid the subject entirely.

Blessing from God comes at all times. It can be shown through the weather, but that is a small part of God’s blessings to us. The Bible is loaded with truths about God’s blessings:

Proverbs 10:6 says that “The godly are showered with blessings.”

Psalm 21:6 shows us that God offers us eternity. “You have endowed him with eternal blessings and given him the joy of your presence.”

Psalm 24:5 talks about the blessing of a right relationship with our Creator. “They will receive the Lord’s blessing and have a right relationship with God their savior.”

Psalm 35:27 speaks about the amazing blessing of God’s peace. “Give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the Lord, who delights in blessing his servant with peace!”

Psalm 85:12 reads, “Yes, the Lord pours down his blessings. Our land will yield its bountiful harvest.”

I think the word “land” can refer to farmer’s fields but also to us and our land. On earth, God’s blessings are being poured out and bountiful harvests can be seen everywhere. When’s the last time you’ve considered your blessings?

Prayer:

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
