Devotional Day 5, November 4th, 2009
The summer after my freshman year, I worked at a Christian camp, where it was easy not to feel embarrassed about God. I made a commitment at that camp that I would fully live what I claimed to be. When 10th grade began, I made the hard choice not to be part of certain crowds, but I still struggled with envy over my friends’ seemingly exciting lifestyle.
During grade 11, I began to learn about and exercise my spiritual gifts and found out that I had a unique contribution to make in the world. Yet despite all my spiritual growth, I continued to wrestle with the embarrassment I felt at school with my friends. My friends knew I was a Christian, but instead of being bold with my faith, I would compromise to fit in. The compromises seemed to be small, such as the music I listened to or the language I used or the type of people I hung around with. It’s not that Jesus wanted me to live in a bubble where I wouldn’t encounter anything bad. He game me choices and let me make my own decisions.
Finally, God broke through. After my junior year, I spent several weeks of the summer on service projects in the inner city and on an international mission trip. By serving others, being in a community with Christians, and spending time in solitude, I learned a lot about God’s character. The ways of the world finally started to lose their appeal. It was then, after I truly experienced God’s love, grace, and goodness, that God naturally flowed out of my life and began to help me share my faith with my friends with confidence.
The embarrassment about my faith disappeared as I started to build real friendships and to tell my friends about God. I had never been so unashamed of my relationship with God in my whole life! God began to use me to work in my friends’ lives. One of my friends committed her life to Jesus this year! I now know what an exciting life I can live as a Christian, walking and growing with God daily and being used to help change lives around me. What I had thought was the more fulfilling and desirable lifestyle can’t even compare to my life now.
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds." ~ Psalm 73:28
Prayer:
Dear God – Sometimes it’s hard for me to stand up for you at school. It seems easier to just go with the flow. But I know that you desire for me to follow the path you show me in the Bible. Please give me the courage to make decisions that honor you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
