Devotional Day 4, November 3rd, 2009

My parents are Christians and I trusted Jesus at an early age. All my life, my family has been different from other families. The differences were small in elementary school, but they were enough that I remember occasionally feeling dumb and embarrassed about my faith. I specifically remember being embarrassed when filling out a typical “What is your favorite…” survey one day at school. I copied what my friends wrote for the “favorite TV actor” category because my family didn’t watch TV enough for me to know what was cool.

In junior high, the differences grew slightly. Dirty language became the norm, gossip escalated, and junky movies were typical topics of conversation. I felt weird knowing more about David and Goliath than I did about the hottest TV star.

Once I reached high school, the differences between my beliefs and what the world was throwing at me were huge. I felt God was fine for young kids and adults, but he didn’t cut it in high school. I became embarrassed about God. I envied the lifestyle of those around me. I made a deal with God: “Just let me live a non-Christian life for a while, God. Then I’ll come back. And anyway God, I deserve to see what it’s like since I’ve been a Christian my whole life.” And so I exchanged the truth for a lie.

"The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love!”

~Psalm 103:8

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to listen to the reminders that you give us - that following you will be the most rewarding and best way to live our lives. Thank you for being patient with us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
