Devotional Day 3, November 2nd, 2009

Fifteen thousand of God’s beautiful kids go to school in and around Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in the 22 schools built by my dear friend Pastor Jean Edmond. The children get a good Christian education, one shirt per year, and a meager meal that they get to eat after they finish their assignments. Yet this is the happiest bunch of kids you’ve ever laid your eyes on!

Recently some friends and I decided to take Christmas to Haiti, so we prepared 15, 000 gift bags packed with Frisbees, stuffed animals, Bibles, and a few other treats. The bags were filled with things the kids had never even dreamed of.

Something happened that Christmas that will forever redefine my concept of “the fun of giving.” In each gift bag was a tiny roll of Lifesavers. Try to imagine how much the children loved their very first taste of a Lifesaver. They smiled from ear to ear!

One little boy stole my heart and changed my life as he took the first Lifesaver out of the pack and ate it. He found it so tasty that he immediately wanted to share the experience. In fact, he tried to give the whole pack back to me. That’s right – the whole pack! One for him, the rest for me. And he couldn’t have been happier!

It’s a great principle, whether you’re talking about Lifesavers or anything else we tend to accumulate. One of these days, try the “one for me, the rest for others” principle and see how happy it makes your heart.

He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

~ II Corinthians 9:6-7

How does this perhaps influence your attitude about filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child?

Can we think of it this year as “one for me, the rest for others?” It may change what we put in the boxes and how much we care about what goes in them.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to commit to this project. We know that there are many ways that we can help those that need aid. This is just one way of doing that – help us to think about giving the “whole pack of Lifesavers.”

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
