Devotional Day 2, October 30th, 2009

Today in history, NBA superstar Michael Jordan came out of retirement to play for the Washington Wizards (2001). The world’s first Lamborghini was unveiled at the Turin Auto Show in Italy (1963). And in 1938, something very funny happened. Many Americans were listening to a radio broadcast. Apparently the reader’s theatre program took the form of a newscast that night. They described a “breaking news” story to listeners: Martians were invading the state of New Jersey! The radio program newscast was so dramatic that many Americans fled from their homes for fear of an actual alien invasion! In the end, they found out that it was theatre on the radio!

Tomorrow in history (Oct 31): Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published Sherlock Holmes. Martin Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses on the door at the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany (1517).

We can learn a lot from history. About 2000 years ago, Jesus was asked a question:

  1. "Why don't you give us a clue about who you are, just a hint of what's going on? When we see what's up, we'll commit ourselves. Show us what you can do. Moses fed our ancestors with bread in the desert. It says so in the Scriptures: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"
  2. Jesus responded, "The real significance of that Scripture is not that Moses gave you bread from heaven but that my Father is right now offering you bread from heaven, the real bread. The Bread of God came down out of heaven and is giving life to the world." ~ John 6:30-32

The people were drawing on their memories of historical moments for the people of Israel. They remembered that the Israelites were given manna from heaven to eat while they were in the wilderness. But what’s interesting is that they never fully understood what God was doing in history by providing food to eat. God was preparing for the moment that Jesus was fully man on earth. He was preparing time and space for this very question that the people are asking Jesus. Jesus would explain that God provides real bread, bread that gives life to the world.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to see history as a way to learn how to better live our lives. Help us to think about what the Bible says and consider what it means for us today, right now. If we haven’t yet eaten the bread that gives life to the world, help us to ask God for it.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
