Devotional Day 6, Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

“I can’t do that! I don’t want to intrude! It’s a big group and I wouldn’t want to interrupt. Maybe I’ll talk to him later about it. I don’t think it’s that big of a problem anyway. Maybe I’m over-reacting? Ah, forget it, it doesn’t really matter anyway.”

Can you relate to this conversation? It’s a monologue that’s been performed in my mind on more than one occasion. There’s a situation unfolding nearby and I’m not comfortable with it. I know that I should do something. Whatever it is, I’m preparing a major argument for why I shouldn’t do it. Sometimes afterward, I feel guilty for not doing something that I should of. Someone got hurt and I could’ve prevented that. Can you relate?

I’ve heard people say that evil and the Father of Lies himself – desires one thing for us more than any other. It is to do nothing. Inactivity means nothing happens whether it’s good or bad. If the devil can get us to do nothing, he can leave us alone – we’re not doing anything worthwhile so he doesn’t have to keep his eye on us.

Thinking of the situations when we don’t do what we know we should – we have to start challenging courtesy. Courtesy is an excellent thing when trying to be respectful. But showing courtesy when we know we should be interrupting is useless. It’s the courtesy that we can be without. So let’s challenge the courtesy that we feel when we’re supposed to speak up, step out, shout loudly – let’s follow through. Jesus spoke up when others did not. The great apostles were imprisoned for speaking up. Our student body could use those types of people – students who are willing to follow through when they see disrespect occurring. Challenge each other to a higher standard!

People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed. ~ Proverbs 13:13

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to follow through on what we know we should. Help us to listen when others remind us to be respectful. Help us to take and give good advice that will help MBCI be a school that we’re proud of.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
