Devotional Day 5, Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009
How can we make everyone’s experience at MBCI a good one? Right answer? Respecting each other. By now, you might be tuning out if you remember all the other devotionals we’ve been through last week and yesterday. We’re talking about respect. And there are a lot of different ways we can look at respect. Why bother, you might ask? I think all of us have a long way to go when it comes to putting others before ourselves and respecting them more than ourselves.
Some of us understand that WE have the ability to make MBCI what we want it to be. For some of us, we don’t know what this means. We feel that stuff happens to us when we’re here at school and we have no ability to change that.
What would it take for you to feel that you have the power to enjoy school as much as you’d like to? What’s holding you back?
Students around us are making MBCI an experience that they won’t forget. And some of us are taking our friends along with us – we’re helping make their school experience as good as ours. I think this is a form of respect. We have to educate each other in order to know how to improve our situation here. If we want someone to give us space when we’re hurting, we have to be respectful of others when they need space and time. If we want people to stop the joking when it gets personal, then we have to stand up to our group and tell them to stop when it gets too personal for somebody else. If you don’t want your stuff stolen after you accidentally leave it in a classroom, then don’t steal someone else’s stuff and tell your friends to do the same.
This is all “golden-rule” stuff right? So let’s read the Golden Rule from where it first came:
Do to others as you would have them do to you. ~ Luke 6:31
Prayer:
Dear God – Help us to use the simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior that you outline in the Gospels – to ask ourselves what we want people to do for us, then take the initiative and do it for someone else.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
