Devotional Day 5, Monday, October 19, 2009
When you think of the word RESPECT, what comes to your mind? Your parents? A friend demanding it from you? Maybe it’s a teacher that comes to your mind. I think we’ve all heard the words, “Show a little respect!” You might think of Aretha Franklin’s famous song, “R – E – S – P – E – C – T, Find out what it means to me.” Whomever or whatever you think of, respect is one of those things we all need a little reminder about from time to time.
The year at MBCI is off to a quick start. Can you believe that we’re over half way through October? How is the year going for you so far? What is MBCI like this year? I think it’s good to be reminded that MBCI is what WE make of it. I’ve heard students use phrases like, “I was kind of part of the wrong group, the wrong crowd.” But what is the wrong crowd? Whatever group you hang out with, you make up a portion of that group. So if you’re in the Wrong, or the Right crowd, you might BE the WRONG or the RIGHT crowd.
WE make up our communities. And we’re part of a community, this student body at MBCI. If you want to get more out of your experience at MBCI, then make something of your experience. You have a lot of chances to make this school what you want it to be. I see everything about community summed up in the word RESPECT. Let’s look at a few “R” words today that are necessary for a healthy school body.
Reaction – Respecting other students means thinking about our reactions before we execute them. Let’s think before reacting.
Responsibility – We’re all trying to learn here at school; we all have a similar goal. It’s our responsibility to treat each other with that in mind. Helping each other to achieve our collective goal benefits each of us.
We are each responsible for our own conduct. ~Galatians 6:5
Prayer:
Dear God – Help us to remember that MBCI is what we make of it. The same goes for day-to-day things. Please help us to guard our reactions and take responsibility to be the people we want to be and the people You want us to be.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
