Devotional Day 4, Friday, October 16, 2009

Ruth Castillos always wore a bright red dress and dark sunglasses. Each Wednesday at 9:30 am, she’d meet a stocky, bearded man in front of the drugstore. Quietly, he would exchange a bottle of pills for her package of dollars bills. Than Ruth would quickly, mysteriously slip into her car and drive briskly away to her tiny house in the country.

Besides going to the drugstore each week, Ruth rarely left home.

She almost never had visitors either. The only person who came to her house was a tall, handsome young man who stopped by each Friday afternoon – and stayed only an hour.

What do you think Ruth was doing? Drug dealing? Embezzling international funds? Hold hostages in her home?

Actually Ruth was struggling to hold her life together. She had an eye disorder that made it difficult for her to see in daylight – forcing her to wear dark sunglasses. During the day, she went out only to see the pharmacist because her mom was terminally ill and needed medicine. Her mom was so sick that neither she nor Ruth could have any visitors. So the only person who came by was a young doctor who made house calls on Fridays.

Ruth’s life was so dark that she wore red to cheer herself up.

It’s easy to jump to conclusions when you first hear about Ruth. I did. It’s easy to judge when you don’t know all the information. It’s easy, but it’s dangerous. Even if we do come to the right conclusions, we’re still wrong to judge.

Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor? ~James 4:11-12

Don’t try to do God’s job. He’s the only One who has any business judging people.

Prayer:

Dear God – Help us to be careful to jump to conclusions. Help us to catch each other and remind each other to get the right information. Help us to leave judgment of others’ actions to You God.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
