DEVOTION Tuesday, October 13th, Day 1

Garrett knew that three months ago he could have asked God to how him how to survive Mrs. Weston’s history class. He still wasn’t sure that he wanted to hear what God might have to say. So instead he whipped off a prayer at the end of his twelve-minute cram session the night before the final exam: “God, please make me do well on my history test tomorrow. I know you don’t want me to flunk and develop poor self-esteem and spend my life sleeping in a gutter, so I trust you’ll work on Mrs. Weston so I get an A. Thanks God.”

Praying made Garrett sure that God would come through for him. Well not totally sure.

By the time Garrett started the test the next morning, he had figured a foolproof way to an A, in case God didn’t deliver. Not only did Garrett have the encyclopedia of American history scribbled on his arm, but he had arranged to sit within easy eyeball range of the smartest kid in class. Between God, crib notes and the son of Einstein, Garrett had things covered.

James 1:6-8 reads,

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

God knows that unless you’re ready to listen and obey, showing you truth is useless. God enthusiastically gives wisdom to anyone who asks. He expects you to trust his ability to answer your request. He expects you to believe him enough to act on the truth he shows you, to follow his directions, to walk his way, to do what he says.

Prayer:

Dear God – You promise to give us all things that we need. Help us to give up our pride and ask for your help, expecting you to answer. Help us trust your answer, and follow through on what we should do.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
