DEVOTION Friday, October 9th Day 6
After the people of Nineveh turned from their evil ways for fear of being destroyed, we pick up the story with Jonah:
1-2 Jonah was furious. He lost his temper. He yelled at God, "God! I knew it—when I was back home, I knew this was going to happen! That's why I ran off to Joppa! I knew you were sheer grace and mercy, not easily angered, rich in love, and ready . . to turn your plans of punishment into . . forgiveness!
4God said, "What do you have to be angry about?"
5But Jonah just left. He went out of the city to the east and sat down in a sulk.
God arranged for a leafy plant to grow right next to Jonah. Jonah was happy for the shade. But then God sent a worm to eat the root of the plant and it died. Then God send a hot wind and sun to beat down on Jonah. Jonah’s anger quickly returned.
10-11God said, "What's this? How is it that you can change your feelings from pleasure to anger overnight about a mere shade tree that you did nothing to get? You neither planted nor watered it. It grew up one night and died the next night. So, why can't I likewise change what I feel about Nineveh from anger to pleasure?
Let’s choose to remember the times that God was close to us, helping us in struggles we were facing. Let’s not forget his mercy and compassion – he gives us life even though we don’t deserve it. Let’s thank him for his grace.
Prayer:
Dear God – Thank you for your forgiveness, your mercy, compassion and grace. You extend these things to us though we don’t deserve them. Thank you for this reminder through Jonah’s story, that you extend second chances to all of us, if we just choose to turn from evil and follow you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
