DEVOTION Wednesday, October 7th Day 4

Then God assigned a huge fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the fish's belly three days and nights. From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God.

Ever wonder what kind of fish could’ve swallowed Jonah? What kind of fish is capable of storing a human being for that long without digesting its food? Further, what kind of fish would swallow a human being without chewing?

Well, there are several theories out there. Some suggest the fish was a Great White Shark. “Sharks have a slow metabolism and a human body could last three days without deterioration.” Only question is, how did Jonah get past the teeth? Others think it was blue whale or a sperm whale. Sperm whales can grow up to 70 feet long and have throats up to 20 inches wide. They also swallow their food whole.

No matter the fish that actually swallowed Jonah, we can understand that God does and can do incredible things. “Could God have prepared a great fish to be in the vicinity of the foundering ship, to scoop Jonah out of the raging sea, transport him to shore and vomit him up? If he is the all-powerful God, preparing a fish and timing the whole event was not a great drain on his power or ability. God is in no way limited by what he created.”

Have you seen God do amazing things in your life? If you haven’t, ask one of your teachers about something that God did in their lives. God is always at work in the world. We just have to take notice.

Prayer:

Dear God – Show us how you are working in the world and the miracles that you are doing in every day life. Help us not to miss out on what you are doing; we want to be a part of it.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen
