DEVOTION Monday, October 5, 2009 Day 2
Let’s take a moment to get back to our friend Jonah from a week ago. If you remember, the ship Jonah was traveling on had been caught in a severe storm. The sailors on the ship feared for their lives. In order to be safe, the sailors on the boat threw Jonah overboard at his request. Immediately the sea was calm.
So picture disobedient Jonah, trying to run the opposite way from what God wanted, floating peacefully in a glassy sea. What would you be thinking as you float there, all alone? God just showed his awesome power by 1) Creating a fierce storm, and 2) Calming the storm. I would imagine that Jonah was feeling pretty small out there in the ocean; just him, the water, and God. I’m guessing a conversation might have started between Jonah and God. Or maybe not.
In Jonah 1:17, the Bible says that,
The LORD provided a great fish to swallow Jonah. . .
Yikes. After feeling pretty lousy about almost killing a ship full of sailors because of his disobedience, it gets worse. He’s floating all alone in this huge ocean and a massive fish starts circling him. Would you freak out? I would. But maybe Jonah wasn’t freaking out. Maybe by now he was starting to realize that God has things in His control. He was in God’s hands now.
Jonah 1:17 continues,
. . . and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.
If you’ve heard this story before, try to catch a new perspective. Three days and three nights. That’s longer than one weekend! If we got swallowed by a fish on Friday after school, we’d be in there until . . . Monday after school. That’s a long time to be off the grid!
Prayer:
Dear God – We’ve already realized that we can’t control life. But we can control how we react to what happens to us. Help us to rely on you as we experience our lives and remember that you are in control. Knowing you’re in control helps us to trust you.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
