DEVOTION Thursday, October 1, 2009 Day 6
According to Wikipedia, Compassion is a human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active desire to alleviate another's suffering.
To actually feel compassionate for someone, it seems that we actually have to WANT to help someone in their suffering. There were some men in the Bible who SHOWED compassion to their friend:
When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. ~ Mark 2:1-4
It takes a lot of guts to want to help a friend that desperately. If you were carrying your friend to Jesus to ask Him to heal your friend’s illness – would you stop at the door when you can see that there’s no way you’re going to get a stretcher through that crowd? Or would you actually lower your friend to the ground to rest and devise a plan to see Jesus? Well, that’s what these friends did – I’m curious to know how long they argued over the idea of tearing a hole through a stranger’s roof.
So if you think you’re compassionate when you feel sorry for someone but keep to your own business – that’s not actually compassion. You are experiencing a feeling, and that is all. To be truly compassionate, you have to do something about the feeling you’re experiencing.
Prayer:
Dear God – Please remind us to DO something about the feelings we have for others around us. We want to serve others. Our convictions, our conscience and the Holy Spirit help to remind us. Help us to follow through on our feelings of compassion.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
