DEVOTION Day 4, September 29, 2009
Remember last week when we had the Pep Rallies? It’s interesting how volleyball is one of those sports where both teams could actually wear the same color and the match could still take place fairly successfully. The girls were wearing sparkly shorts and multicolored shirts, the guys were wearing, well, a lot of pink - let’s stop there.
But if you try that with football, basketball or soccer, you’re in for a pretty bad game. Referees may make poor calls as they attempt to distinguish Side A from Side B. Brawls may even break out in the stands as over-zealous fans accidentally yell things at their own team and face the mob!
The point is that uniforms help us see the different teams. I was thinking about how many teams I’ve played on in my life. I’ve played tee-ball, basketball, hockey, soccer, futsal [pron: foot-saul], broomball, tag, dodge-ball, volleyball, football, badminton, doubles tennis, ultimate, and the list goes on. That led me to think about how many teams I’ve played on, when I think of my actions, how I live my life. There are days when we are just plain happy and we spread joy around. Other days, we’re sad, depressed, angry – and sometime we don’t even know why. If we think of our attitudes and actions as being on one team, I think some days, I switch teams. Sometimes I just feel like being angry, and I spread that around. Other days, I’m happy and I play for that team.
In a scrimmage game, it’s rarely a fun idea to change teams when you’re team is winning. Someone says, “Okay, okay, stop! We get Charlie now because your team is too good!” Don’t you hate that when you’re the person switching?
So then why do we switch teams from day to day in our lives? If we’re on the good team on a happy day, is there some way that we can stay on the good team the next day? Even despite how we are feeling?
In Matthew 22:37, Jesus instructs us to love God and love our neighbors. Jesus is pretty clear that we should be doing this ALL the time.
Prayer:
Dear God – We want to choose to stay on the winning team, the team that is loving You and loving other people. Help us to stay true to your colors.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
