DEVOTION Day 3, September 28, 2009
On this very day, September 28, over 35 years ago, there was a hockey game taking place in Moscow, Russia. Some think that every person in Canada was watching.
It was 1972. The Soviets led Canada 5 to 3 at the end of the Second Period, and Russian referees threatened to turn the game into a brawl, but Phil Esposito and Yvan Cornoyer both scored in the third period to tie the game. There were only seconds left in the game and this is what fans heard. The commentator, Foster Hewitt, started to sound excited,
“Here's a shot. Henderson makes a wild stab for it and falls. Here's another shot. Right in front. They score!! Henderson scores for Canada!”
Paul Henderson scored on Vladislav Tretiak with 34 seconds remaining in regulation time, giving Team Canada a 6-5 victory over the USSR hockey all-stars, and a four, three and one (4-3-1) record in the eight game Summit Series.
I know some of you may not really care much about hockey, but I think it can really give us some things to think about for today. Paul Henderson’s first breath was a pretty humble one. His parents couldn’t drive to the hospital due to a severe snowstorm, so they took a horse-drawn sleigh instead. But Paul was born on the way, in the middle of an Ontario blizzard! That aside, did you know that Paul Henderson was about to quit hockey before he even made it to the NHL? It was his father who reminded him that he had worked hard in the sport and encouraged Paul to play long enough to see if he could at least make it to the NHL. It turns out that he played only one more year in Junior before getting signed to the Detroit Red Wings.
Sometimes we give up on the goals that we have because they take so long before we see any change.
1. What’s something that you need to stick with? A goal that is still important to you?
2. What’s holding you back from accomplishing the task?
3. Take a moment to decide on one thing you can do to get back on track.
Ask God to help you.
There is no one like the God of Israel. He rides across the heavens to help you,
across the skies in majestic splendor. ~ Deuteronomy 33:26
Prayer:
Dear God – If there are things that we need to keep working at or practicing in our lives, please remind us what they are and help us to remember that they are important to us.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
