DEVOTION Day 4, September 21, 2009
Last week we heard about Tabitha, this amazing woman who was serving the widows and orphans in the port city of Joppa. There was another person in the Bible who spent some time in Joppa. He was a man who knew God well. God asked him to do a task for him. But the interesting part is that the man decided not to go where God asked him to So he went to Joppa instead. If you remember, Joppa was a port city. So it was place from which this man could go anywhere. All he had to do was purchase a ticket and hop on a boat to anywhere.
When we choose not to follow what God asks of us, and we think we can get away from God – watch out! God sometimes chases after us and won’t let us off the hook. The opportunity that he had for us may be gone – like helping someone – but God will ask us to do a task for him again, until we do it. There’s really no reason for us to not do what God asks us to do. God knows best.
In the Bible, it says:
But he got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
Prayer:
Dear God – Our choices are ours to make. Help us to choose to say YES to you because we know that you know us the best and love us so much. We know you have our best interests in mind.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
