DEVOTION Day 4, September 11, 2009
others first, me last
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial. Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.
I Corinthians 10:23-24
Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God.
I Corinthians 10:31
God asks us to look out for the good of others. When we do this, we are serving God and his glory. The hindrance that keeps us from looking out for others is the great characteristic that is in all of us – being self-centered. Things in the world influence us; we need to take care of ourselves, right? We make plans for each day and we expect to accomplish them.
BUT, God isn’t self-centered and he wants us to learn how to think of others before ourselves. God’s kingdom isn’t like the world that we live in now. God’s kingdom is kind of backwards – some call it upside-down. You see, when we look out for others, often our own needs get taken care of. Sometimes when we care for others and put their needs first, our needs and plans become less important to us. They get put into the correct perspective; God’s perspective.
PRAYER
Dear God – Make us humble enough to put others first. Make us strong enough to give in when we should. Help us to be careful with our words or actions.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
