International

International Student Update

On May 20, there was a meeting of the nations in the high school staff room. Twenty nine delegates came from afar: Korea, Nigeria, India, Hong Kong, Congo, Beijing, and yes, even Canada. Thai food was served - rosy cheeks betrayed the wonderful spiciness of the food. Games were played, speeches were given, gifts were given, and there was a generous amount of laughter and tears thrown into the mix. All students expressed appreciation for the school, the teachers, and the international student program. It was a special wind-up evening.

As an international student group, we meet weekly after school for the purposes of friendship, fun, and conversation (and need I mention food?!) This year’s group is comprised of 18 students: 13 international and 5 volunteers. Staffing the department are Mr. Darryl Peters (Director), Mrs. Anny Tielman (EAL Instructor), Mrs. Marilyn Hudson (Writing/TOEFL Instructor) and Mrs. Karen Froese (Homestay Assistant). We have had a blast together with many great memories, including: Swimming Party, Hutterite visit, Moose hockey game, Ice skating at the Forks, and trip to the Mint.

It is with great joy that we are graduating 5 international students: Jerry, Esther, Bavdeep, Nafisa, and Safina. We also extend a big thank you to Melissa, Hillary, and Michael who have faithfully volunteered for 3 years and will be graduating. In addition, Ricky and Jacky will be leaving to continue their schooling elsewhere. Finally, Mr. Peters is off to Tanzania for something completely different. We will miss you all and wish you God’s richest blessing in your futures!

Next year’s crew will be quite different. Five will return and 6 new students will join them. We are happy to announce that Mr. Julian Hudson will become the new Director of International Students, while Mrs. Hudson will assist with administration and continue with writing. Mrs. Tielman will continue in her capable role as EAL instructor and Mrs. Froese will assist with homestays. They are looking forward to what next year has in store.
